Two Years Later...Athens and Santorini

Well, this is two years overdue but better late than never, right?

Remember when our passports were useful? At the end of August 2018, Sarah, Kathryn, and I went to Athens and Santorini. We spent two nights in Athens, flew to Santorini where we spent four nights in an airbnb in Oía on the northwestern tip of the island (which is actually a volcano that collapsed during the Minoan eruption, all of the land above water is the rim of the crater known as the caldera). We spent one more night in Athens to maximize our time in Santorini before flying back to the US.

It was quite hot in Athens so afternoon thunderstorms that shielded us from the sun were welcome. We made sure to hit all of the must-see spots - we trekked up to the Acropolis, climbed the stairs of the Panathenaic stadium, ate kebabs and hummus and fava dip. We had a little pool time at our hotel and had drinks at the roof top bar with a view. In Santorini we hiked the 7ish miles from Oía to Fira, rented ATVs, figured out the bus system, watched the sunset from our afternoon sailing cruise, sat on our rental’s roof deck with store-bought drinks after dinner. Given the length of our trip, we kept it pretty low key with the night life, not wanting to lose a day to sleeping in late and/or being hung over. We chose to go to Santorini over Mykonos for the more low key vibe which definitely ended up being the right choice.

One of the best parts of traveling with these two is that we’re all happy to be together or do our own things and meet up later in the day. We know each other’s habits and plan accordingly. We had days where we all did the same thing and we had days were we did entirely separate things. Truly a delightful way to travel.

And a few iPhone photos - the quality of these is garbage unfortunately but I think they’re still worth sharing!
