The Coombs Kids

Jocelyne (age 15) and Riley (age 11) have 100+ traps that they haul a few times a week, selling their lobsters locally as the Next Generation Lobster Company. The children of a commercial fisherman and the Director of Marine Resources for the Maine Coast Fisherman’s Association, fishing is in their blood. I tagged along one beautiful fall afternoon, documenting how they work together, their sibling dynamic in plain view for many laughs along the way.

While Riley is still firmly a kid, Jocelyn is growing into a determined and hard working young woman, traits that she clearly gets from both her mom and her dad. I admire her confidence in knowing that she wants to go into the trades professionally, something she’s actively working toward as a sophomore in high school.

Full disclosure: their mom, Monique, is one of my best friends from high school so this was as much of a social engagement as anything else! As they wind down the season, I’m glad we were able to squeeze this visit in.
