I got involved with Make-A-Wish Maine last summer, volunteering on the planning committee for their biggest annual fundraiser, Wish Night. I was thrilled when they asked me to photograph a wish granting ceremony - such an honor!
Wish Kid Kate, whose story was featured by our local CBS affiliate, wished for a puppy, preferably one that could sit in her lap. A few weeks earlier, Kate was surprised on live radio with a limo ride to go pick out her new Yorkshire terrier puppy. In what was described to me as an immediate connection, Rose the Yorkie, found her way to Kate, becoming a (future!) member of the family.
Fast forward to early December when Rose was old enough to leave her mother, Kate was treated to the now-familiar covid-era car parade escorted by the local fire and police department for a special delivery. With masking and social distancing to keep everyone safe, we watched friends and family drive by with signs of well wishes, waves, and blown kisses of support and love. Given that it was a chilly, gray day, a heater was set up on the porch to keep Kate and Rose warm while they got reacquainted. There were puppy accessories to unwrap, and Rose got passed around the immediate family to meet her new housemates. I only met Kate and her family a few minutes before it all started but they were so warm and friendly, it was easy to get swept up in the emotion!
Like everyone, Make-A-Wish Maine has had to pivot often during the pandemic in order to continue granting wishes. I’ve now met and worked with many of their staff and volunteers and can say that you won’t find a more dedicated group of people.
